Installing Windows in UEFI-mode

 

In this article you will find information on how you can install a 64 Bit Windows (Windows Vista SP1, Windows 7, Windows 8, Windows Server 2008, Windows Server 2008 R2 and Windows Server 2012) in UEFI mode.

Set-up Launch Storage opROM policy to UEFI first

Before being installed, the set-up Launch Storage opROM policy must be changed to UEFI first.

UEFI - Boot

During the installation, you must be sure to start your storage device in the UEFI mode.

In the following screenshot you can see the boot options: USB-Stick, DVD Drive, UEFI: USB-Stick, UEFI: DVD Drive and UEFI-Shell. For example, to boot in UEFI mode using the DVD drive, the command UEFI:HL-DT-... must be selected.

During the Windows installation process, there is no difference to the "normal" installation of Windows, with the exception that boot partitions may be > 2TB in UEFI mode.

UEFI - Shell

If booting the installation media does not work, the setup can also be initiated via UEFI - Shell.

In the following screenshot, you can see the necessary commands in order to trigger the setup manually:

Now the Windows Setup should launch.

Checking the UEFI-Installation

After the successful installation of Windows, you can verify that Windows is installed in UEFI mode.

You can do this either by checking in the BIOS or using the command prompt tool, Diskpart.

Checking in BIOS

If the UEFI installation was successful, you will find the entry Windows Boot Manager in the Boot Options Priorities of your BIOS.

Checking with Diskpart

If you want to check the UEFI installation with DiskPart, you must run the Windows command prompt as an administrator and enter the following commands:

If the command list disk shows that the system drive is a GTP drive, the UEFI installation of Windows has been successful.
